Automated fresh food logistics at EDEKA
with 160.000 E-Performance containers
Executive summary

EDEKA Nord operates a highly automated fresh food logistics center in Lüttow-Valluhn, where meat and meat products are prepared for delivery to 650 EDEKA stores. The operation manages a broad assortment of around 2,500 meat products, cold cuts, and sausages, with stores receiving deliveries several times per week.
Within this demanding environment, Utz Group supplied 160,000 E-Performance bins. The bins are made for:
- food logistics
- automated conveyor systems
- clear identification
- hygienic handling
They support reliable storage, transport, and order preparation in a logistics process where freshness, timing, and system compatibility are essential.

The Client
EDEKA Nord is part of the EDEKA Group and supplies stores across northern Germany. At the NORDfrische Center in Lüttow-Valluhn, meat and meat products are processed, stored, picked, and prepared for delivery to EDEKA stores.
The site combines production-related logistics with incoming goods from external partners. Store orders are prepared individually, depending on each store’s assortment, order volume, and delivery schedule.

The challenge
Fresh food logistics places high demands on automation and packaging. At EDEKA’s NORDfrische Center, the logistics setup needed to support a large product range, frequent deliveries, and store-friendly sequencing.
The key requirements included:
- reliable handling of meat and meat products in a temperature-sensitive supply chain
- smooth movement through automated storage, conveyor, picking, and loading processes
- hygienic, food-safe containers suitable for repeated use
- clear identification and traceability of containers in automated workflows
- packaging that can support high daily throughput without disrupting material flow
- compatibility with different load carriers used for store delivery
The packaging had to work as part of the system, not as a separate element. In a fresh food operation, unreliable containers can affect throughput, handling quality, and process stability.
The solution
Utz Group supplied 160,000 E-Performance bins for EDEKA’s fresh food logistics operation. The E-Performance container is designed for the food industry and for use in automated logistics systems.
The container supports the process in several ways:
- Food-safe material - made from food-grade virgin material supporting hygienic handling
- Automation compatibility - geometry designed for conveyor compatibility and automated handling
- Traceability - in-mold labels and GS1 coding enable clear identification
- Hygienic design - light blue color, ventilation holes, and washable surfaces support food environments
- Process reliability - designed for repeated use across the process chain
In the broader EDEKA system, KNAPP’s automation handles storage, picking, conveyor flow, and loading. The Utz bins provide a standardized reusable packaging base that allows products to move through these processes consistently.

How the bins support EDEKA’s logistics process
At the NORDfrische Center, goods enter the system from two main sources. Products from the neighboring production facility are conveyed directly to the picking and shipping area. Goods from external producers are registered in goods-in and prepared for storage either manually or through automated depalletizing and unstacking.
From there, containers are conveyed to the Evo Shuttle storage and picking system. The system provides 70,000 storage locations, enabling space-efficient storage and order processing.
The E-Performance bins support this process by providing a consistent container format for automated movement, storage, picking, and loading. On peak days, up to 40,000 containers are prepared for delivery to EDEKA stores. Depending on store requirements, containers are palletized or loaded into insulated containers to support cold chain requirements.
Results
The project supports EDEKA’s goal of efficient, store-friendly, fresh food delivery. Based on the available source information, the logistics setup enables store-specific order preparation and the use of multiple load carriers for transport, supporting flexible distribution and reliable supply to stores.
The Utz E-Performance bins contribute by supporting automated handling, traceability, hygiene, and repeated use in the fresh food supply chain.
