Optimizing material flow at Handtmann

with Utz EUROTEC containers

Executive summary

Facing increasing production volumes and a need for greater warehouse efficiency, Handtmann Maschinenfabrik GmbH required a robust solution to modernize their logistics center. By integrating 30,000 Utz EUROTEC containers into a new automated Dematic Multishuttle system, the company significantly accelerated its internal material flow. This smart collaboration resulted in a system capable of 3,800 picks per day, ensuring rapid spare parts supply and seamless automated handling.

The Client

Handtmann Maschinenfabrik GmbH, part of the Handtmann Group, is a leading global manufacturer of filling and portioning technology for the food industry. Based in Biberach, Upper Swabia, this family-run mechanical engineering company serves a diverse client base ranging from small artisanal businesses to large industrial enterprises worldwide.

With a reputation built on quality and precision, Handtmann faced the challenge of adapting its logistics capabilities to match its growth. To maintain their high standards and ensure efficient production supply, the company embarked on a major project to expand and modernize their logistics center.

The challenge

As a global player with a broad product portfolio, Handtmann deals with high volumes and complex throughput requirements. The existing pallet warehouse and automated small parts warehouse (AKL) at their Biberach headquarters could no longer keep pace with the company's growing demands.

To address this, Handtmann decided to construct a new 6,000-square-meter logistics center. The primary challenge was not just expanding capacity but optimizing processes to handle a higher frequency of goods. They required a system that could manage the storage and transport of components to the small parts warehouse with absolute precision.

Critically, the new system had to be implemented during ongoing operations. The automated solution, designed by Dematic, required a specific type of load carrier. One that was:

  • durable enough for continuous use,
  • precise enough for robotic handling,
  • and capable of integrating seamlessly with high-speed shuttle technology.

The solution

To meet the rigorous demands of the new Dematic Multishuttle system, Handtmann selected Utz as their partner for load carriers. The solution involved the deployment of 30,000 EUROTEC containers, specifically chosen for their suitability in automatic handling on conveyor systems.

The EUROTEC containers, measuring 600 x 400 x 220 mm, are designed to interface perfectly with automated logistics. They feature specific engagement points for robotic grippers and stable bases that ensure smooth travel on conveyor belts. For Handtmann, these containers are used to transport components immediately after goods receipt, moving them through weight control and directly into the automated small parts warehouse.

While the EUROTEC is engineered for automation, the selected variation also includes grip holes. This clever design feature allows for ergonomic manual handling when necessary, bridging the gap between the automated system and the human workforce at picking stations.

The result

The integration of Utz EUROTEC containers has been a key factor in the success of Handtmann's new logistics center. The containers facilitate a highly efficient material supply chain, allowing the system to operate at peak performance.

With the new system in place, supported by the reliability of the EUROTEC, Handtmann has achieved:

  • High throughput: The system is capable of up to 3,800 picks per day.
  • Increased speed: The supply of spare parts is now many times faster than with the previous system.
  • Seamless integration: The containers flow smoothly through the Dematic Multishuttle system, from storage to picking stations.

By utilizing a container specifically designed for automated environments, Handtmann has ensured that their internal logistics are as precise and capable as the machines they manufacture.
