Utz revolutionized battery packaging for an electromobility manufacturer
Case study – Automotive industry
Executive summary
The automotive sector is rapidly evolving with a focus on new technologies, and Utz is at the forefront of this development. In a project for a leading manufacturer in the field of electromobility, Utz won an international tender to develop a new packaging concept for lithium-ion batteries.
Despite the challenges of confidentiality and stringent requirements, Utz's innovative solution has significantly improved the handling, transportation, and safety of these sensitive goods.
The client
The client is a leading manufacturer in the field of electromobility, known for its cutting-edge technology and commitment to sustainability.
The challenge
The project required the design and manufacture of a new packaging concept for lithium-ion batteries, which are sensitive goods that must be protected against damage, shock, and leakage of liquids.
The packaging needed to meet very high demands on handling, materials, standards, and ergonomics, and had to be designed for automatic handling by industrial robots on a conveyor.
Additionally, the packaging had to comply with UN regulations for hazardous goods under all relevant conditions for the USA, China, and Europe.
The solution
Utz developed a comprehensive solution that included a combination of an existing Utz standard pallet and cover with a specially developed battery tray. This reusable/returnable container is designed for automatic handling by industrial robots and meets all technical requirements.
Utz carried out the necessary tests in accordance with UN regulations for hazardous goods and obtained the corresponding certificates with the support of their qualified partner, Nordic Area (TTCommerce AB).
Regular training sessions and workshops at Utz's premises ensure that partners remain up to date with the latest technology and solutions. The two Utz production sites in the USA and China enable the worldwide rollout of the new packaging concept, shortening transport distances and ensuring readiness for delivery at short notice.
Implementation process
- Initial consultation: Utz and the client assessed the system requirements and objectives.
- Packaging design and production: Utz designed and manufactured the new packaging concept tailored to the client's specific requirements.
- Continuous support: Utz provided ongoing support, including regular training sessions and workshops for partners.
Results
The collaboration between the client and Utz led to significant operational improvements:
- Efficient handling and transportation: The new packaging concept enabled automatic handling by industrial robots and improved the safety and protection of lithium-ion batteries during transportation.
- Compliance with regulations: The packaging met all UN regulations for hazardous goods and obtained the necessary certificates for the USA, China, and Europe.
- Global rollout: The two Utz production sites in the USA and China enabled the worldwide rollout of the new packaging concept, shortening transport distances and ensuring readiness for delivery at short notice.
