Component Holders & Trays

A specialised tray for specific applications

In the automated warehouses of shopping centres and mail-order companies, a multitude of goods are delivered in very different packages. In most cases, these packages are not suitable for conveyor systems.

Re-packing into respective plastic containers would be completely unthinkable for economic reasons as well as being time consuming. Therefore, the delivered packages are sorted onto trays suitable for automatic conveyor systems. Depending on the objects being transported on the tray, each tray is an individual customer solution, similar to the component holders, which are developed for a special purpose.

Identification

In order to organise new large warehouses, precise identification of the product carrier is imperative in order to ensure that products are easy to locate when required. Utz offers the option to fit the trays with barcode labels or RFID tags.

Thermoformed component holders

Accurate perfection

Thermoforming is a manufacturing process which reforms thermoplastic synthetics. The resulting load carriers are called component holders. Component holders are able to perfectly incorporate products. There are stackable and stack/nest component holders consisting of frame tools or as intermediate layers. Examples of component holders manufactured according to individual customer specifications follow below.

Stackable component holders from a frame tool

An individual base insert is developed for the product being packaged, and this is fitted into an existing frame tool. In this way the same frame can be reused as often as required. Frame tools are characterised by the special contour of the frame. With that, precise positioning is possible, so that the component holders can also be deployed on automatic conveyer systems.

Stackable component holders

Depending on the height of the product, sometimes component holders can be designed to be stacked. This means that more products can be stored on the same footprint. Sensitive components, stored in stacked component holders, are protected from dust and dirt.

Component holders that stack and nest

Stack and nest component holders can be stacked one on top of the other when full. When the products are removed, the empty component holders can be rotated 180 degrees and then nested inside each other. This enables a space saving of up to 80% possible when transporting empty.

Component holders as container inserts

If precision parts have to be delivered in a plastic container, such as a VDA-KLT, a RAKO or a EUROTEC, then it is sensible to first secure these parts into a component holder, which is then inserted into a suitable plastic container. If there is a change to the component series at a later date, the plastic containers can remain in use and only the insert needs be replaced.

Base and lid in one: intermediate layers

First, the products to be packed are placed into the cavities of the first component holder. Onto that, a further component holder is placed, the base contour of which fits exactly onto the layer underneath. In this manner, the upper component holder sits on the inserted products of the tray underneath. The design of intermediate layers is complex. First, the cavities for the precise fitting location of the components must be designed. In addition, the base of the component holders must be made in such way that it can be stacked onto the parts underneath.

Precision for each piece

Specifications to precision and tolerances are some-times so extensive that component holders need to be injection-moulded. It may also occur that struts and indentations make injection-moulding seem the only sensible method of production. If very large quantities of a component holder need to be manufactured, injection-moulding is frequently the more economical production process.
